H3453 Galvanic Corrosion Protection Tape – an answer to corrosion problems?

Put two different metals, say aluminium and steel, in contact in a wet environment and the result is predictable - corrosion.  Specifically, a phenomenon known as galvanic corrosion will occur when metals with different electrode potentials are in contact in an electrolyte (imagine the aluminium sheet floor fixed to the steel frame of a trailer on a wet road in winter).  If measures are not taken to electrically isolate the two metals, galvanic corrosion will occur, resulting in damage and possibly danger. There are a number of techniques available to prevent such corrosion and one of the most obvious is to separate the two metals with a non-conductive material.  At Heskins we know that in the past our customers have used our plastic materials to achieve this – and we thought we would put this to the test. Samples of steel, stainless steel and aluminium were used in pairs in contact in a marine solution.  For each pairing, one pair had the metals in direct contact and the same pair was used with H3453 galvanic corrosion protection tape between the metals forming an isolating barrier. The samples were then left for seven weeks.   When examined, as expected, where steel was paired with steel there was little or no corrosion and the presence or absence of the H3453 made no difference (see fig.1 & 2)

Things were different when the metals in contact were steel and aluminium.  Without a barrier there was significant corrosion, see fig. 3.

However, using H3453 galvanic corrosion protection tape to form an isolating barrier made a dramatic difference, see fig. 4.

Results were similar when aluminium was paired with stainless steel. Summary As can be seen, our H3452 galvanic corrosion tape makes a massive difference, it is a cost effective material that performs very effectively and provides long lasting protection to help prevent corrosion between different metals.  We can supply in roll format or die cut pieces that act as pads and virtually any shape or width can be produced.
